MACKINTOSH/RALPH: I have found the first thread in connecting my MACKINTOSH and RALPH lines to "prove" that Galloway Ralph MACKINTOSH was the son of Angus MACKINTOSH and Margaret RALPH Mackintosh in the 1841 Scotland census for Nairn. The No. of the Parish is 123 and the Enumerator’s Schedule is No. 1 for partial Nairn. There is a Margaret MACKINTOSH, age 44, who was born in Nairn, living on King Street with John RALPH, age 20 who is a shoemaker and Lauchlan, age 13 and Galloway, age 10. This information is on page 20. It is not clear to me the relationship of John RALPH to Margaret. He could be a nephew? At any rate this takes me a step closer to having this family proven. If any of the members sees a connection I would love to exchange information. |

I write to enquire about an old cemetery at Nigg, Ross-shire. My interest in this cemetery stems from research into my husband’s Scottish ancestors. His 3xgreat grandfather was Donald GRANT, born c1786 in Nigg near Tain. He married Margaret ROSS at White Bog. Her parents were David ROSS and Marjory (May) GAIR. Donald’s parents were Donald and Margaret (nee GAIR). Perhaps Marjory and Margaret were sisters and thus we have cousins marrying. I have read that there are GAIRS (Gayres) buried at the Nigg cemetery. Can anyone help? |

| ROSS | Alyssum Ross | aly.ross1@hotmail.com | Looking for links and/or contacts with the descendants and relations of the “Macleod Family” that lived at ‘Reiskmore’, Delny, Ross-shire. Hector and Isobel MACLEOD moved there about 1809 from Newton; their son Alexander married Ann ROSS in 1851 and their son Alexander (Lovat Scout) married Elsie Rebecca PAGE, from Southampton, in December 1904. They were my grandparents. |
| ROSS | David Ross | davidwross@tiscali.co.uk | My great great grandfather John ROSS, fisherman of Shandwick died in July 1862. His details at death state "formerly married to Ann VASS, latterly to Margaret VASS". It is about his first wife Ann VASS that I seek information and if any member can help me with identifying her, I shall be grateful. In the 1841 census she appears with John (35), her age shown as 32 and her birth place as Ross & Cromarty. There are three children, Andrew (17), William (5), and Donald (3). By elementary maths I calculate that she must have been 15 at Andrew’s birth yet his (Andrew’s) death certificate confirms that his mother was Ann VASS and his father John ROSS. The marriage of John ROSS and Ann VASS is found in the Nigg OPRs as being on 27th December 1821. If the census details are right, she would have been 12 at marriage! I conclude the census ages are wrong. On 4th June 1847 John married Margaret VASS (Nigg OPR), so Ann must have died between 1841 and 1847. I can find no record of this event. I have been quite unable to establish any details about Ann’s birth, parentage or death. It may be that one of our members has done research into the Vass family and can help. |

They had issue: - Donald, 1831; Mary, 1833; Margaret, 1839; Alexander and Charles, 1845, who married Isabella MACRAE and had 12 children. | ROSS | Laurel Lahay | lahay@shaw.ca | I’m submitting this query on behalf of the Campbell River Genealogy Society in British Columbia, Canada. Every year we instigate a competition or ‘quest’ where a small team research the ‘brick wall’ genealogy of one of our society members. The group is given two months to complete the task and present their findings at one of our monthly meetings. They are finding it a challenge to research the illusive Hector McLEAN of Inverness. He was the g.g.g. grandfather of one of our members, Marilyn Hilsden. A chapter from a book on B.C. pioneers states that Hector was a captain with the 42nd Highlanders who fought under Abercrombie on the Nile and under Moore and Wellington in Spain. Hector McLEAN married Catherine ROSS on Oct 14th, 1806 and they had at least six children born between 1808 and 1822 (Margaret, Donald, Walter, Elizabeth, Ann & Catherine). After viewing the Inverness Parish Records, we discovered that Hector was listed as a pensioner on one record and as a tailor on another. Hector’s wife, Catherine ROSS was reportedly from Tain, Ross & Cromarty. If the Scottish naming pattern was followed, it is likely that Catherine’s parents were Walter ROSS & Elspet McLEOD who were married on May 7th, 1779 in Ross & Cromarty with Catherine ROSS being born on April 27th, 1780 and her brother Donald ROSS being born on Oct. 21st, 1782. Elizabeth McLEAN, (the daughter of Hector McLEAN & Catherine ROSS) was baptised on June 18th 1816 and attended a school for girls in Inverness. Elizabeth McLEAN, the g.g. grandmother of Marilyn HILSDEN, subsequently immigrated to Ontario, Canada in the 1840s and married Archibald FERGUSON of Glasgow. The quest team must present their findings on June 4th. If anyone can assist with information on this family and/or the military records for Hector McLEAN it would be very much appreciated. Any additional information on the school for girls in Inverness would also be a bonus. According to Elizabeth McLEAN’s sampler, her teacher’s name was Mrs. PICTON when Elizabeth McLEAN attended the school in 1829. |

FRASER: My great-great grandfather, Alexander FRASER, a timber merchant, was married to Caroline Jane SCHOMBERG on 24 March 1825 in Inverness. Their daughter, Caroline Jane, was born the following year. Alexander died of cholera at his home in Merkinch, Inverness on 26 October 1832 and was buried in Chapel Yard two days later. I am assuming that he was in his late thirties at the time of his death. I am particularly interested in finding out the names of his parents and if he had any brothers or sisters. If anyone recognises the family, please contact me. |

SOUTH UIST |
Donald Read | ap357@ncf.ca | Researching all families who emigrated from Isle of South Uist 1848-1852 and who settled initially in southern Ontario. |
| STEWART | Bill Taylor | billht@tiscali.co.uk | GRAHAM/STEWART: A young man called George GRAHAM, a marble cutter, appeared from nowhere and married my great grand aunt, Catherine STEWART, on 18th July 1851 in Barony, Lanark. They then set sail from Liverpool on 28th August 1852 arriving at Melbourne as assisted immigrants on 8th December 1852. I have one letter which he wrote from Liverpool to my great grandmother, his sister-in-law, in August 1852. The Australian authorities say he was 21 when he arrived there and his numerous Australian descendants believe that he came from Wester Ross. However, I have been unable to find any more information about his Scottish ancestry. Perhaps another of your members is looking for an ancestor called George GRAHAM who disappeared around 1851? Any information on these two people would be most welcome. |
