KENNEDY |
Tracey Macleod | traceymacleod@ hotmail.com |
One of my 9xgreat grandfathers, Donald KENNEDY, born c1680, used an alias of McGILANDRISH. On some baptismal entries he is listed as Donald KENNEDY and others as McGLANDRISH. A son, William, born 1700, also used the alias. Both men were farmers in the Castlehill/Petty area. I can’t work out why this would be. On the Internet three mentions of the name are all connected to the McGILLIVRAYs. I know from the Culloden papers this name was not very popular and was wondering if the same applied to McGLANDRISH. Can anyone help please? |

KENNEDY |
John Bird | johnbird@iprimus.com.au | KENNEDY/CAMPBELL: my G x 3 Grandparents were John Kennedy and Anne Campbell. They were born circa 1790 in Ross and Cromarty and married about 1815. The only child I am aware of is my great-great grandfather John Kennedy who was born in Lochalsh in 1822 and died on 16/3/1908 at Delny Farm Parish of Alness. He married Flora McKinnon on 3/1/1843 at Ardelve. Any information about John Kennedy and Ann Campbell would be very much appreciated. |

KIRK |
Patricia Valentine | abacussafety@ dsl.pipex.com |
Information sought for the following: - Margaret MACDONALD, born c1738, who married John WARDEN (excise officer). Margaret was a daughter of Hugh MACDONALD, Sheriff Clerk in Sutherland and Christian KIRK, daughter of Robert KIRK, Minister in Dornoch. Hugh and Christian married in 1738. Margaret inherited tenements and land from her father called ‘Goose Croft’ and ‘Croftpeddie’ or ‘Croftfeddie’ both in Dornoch; also Croftloan in Balloan. The properties were later sold in two lots in 1796 and 1814 following the death of her husband John WARDEN. Christian KIRK’s father was Robert KIRK, born 1644 in Aberfoyle. He is my husband’s 7 x great grandfather. He studied at Edinburgh University and at St. Andrews, receiving his Masters Degree at seventeen. After his ordination he served at various parishes for the next twenty years. He married Isobel CAMPBELL in 1678; she died two years after the marriage and his second wife, Margaret CAMPBELL, Isobel’s cousin, had a son Robert, who in turn had a daughter, Christian KIRK. Many thanks in anticipation. |

LAUDER |
Jean Farquhar | jeanfarquhar@ clear.net.nz |
FORBES: Duncan G. FORBES married Elizabeth McKENZIE on 28th June 1852 in the Parish of Dunoon & Kilmuir, Argyllshire and there is anecdotal evidence that they resided at a location named in records variously as Portnastuc, Portnastuck and Portnastaich. I have been unable to locate this on any early map. Can anyone tell me if there was such a place? Could it have been the name of a property in or near Dunoon during the 1800s? Duncan and Elizabeth FORBES subsequently moved to Port Appin and ran what is now known as Aird’s Hotel. The youngest of their thirteen children, born 2nd November 1872, was registered as Neil FORBES. He later added the maiden surname of his mother and was known in New Zealand as Neil McKenzie FORBES. He was my ancestor and is recorded as having spoken of “Ardentinny” in relation to his friend Sir Harry LAUDER. I wish to find the exact location of this “Ardentinny” – can anyone help? In addition any information at all that can be provided about this FORBES family would be much appreciated. |
